Le HALS non assorbono le radiazioni UV, ma agiscono per inibire la degradazione del polimero rimuovendo continuamente e ciclicamentei radicali liberi che vengono prodotti dalla foto-ossidazione del polimero. Il processo complessivo cd. ciclo di Denisov è estremamente complesso. L'elevata efficienza e longevità di HALS sono dovute a questo processo ciclico in cui gli HALS vengono rigenerati piuttosto che consumati durante il processo di stabilizzazione.
La piperidina è un composto organico (CH2)5NH.
Èun'ammina eterociclica secondaria con un anello a sei termini con cinque unità ponte metilene (-CH2-)e un atomo di azoto
La struttura piperidinica delle HALS rende queste particolarmente resistenti alle reazioni collaterali.(cfr. intramolecolari di Cope).
Nelle HALS il gruppo piperidina reattivo è solitamente legato a ingombranti scaffold chimici, al fine di ridurne la volatilità durante il processo di fusione del polimero.
E' altamente efficace in poliacetali, poliammidi, poliuretani, PVC flessibile e rigido, nonché miscele di PVC e in alcuni elastomeri stirenici.

GREEN STABILIGHT 119 è particolarmente adatto per l'uso di film per serre agricole in PE, fibre di PP, PP riempito con borotalco e parti automobilistiche TPO. Può essere utilizzato anche in EVA, EPDM, PA, PET, PMMA e altri materiali.
